T…M…N…T…

Do you know what it’s like
to be different,
alone?

Do you know how it feels
not to be seen?

We’ve saved them countless times,

given more of ourselves than asked,

fought back from the edge of defeat.

And now, we have to save them again.

And all they would do
if they knew who we are,

what we are,
is treat us like the freaks
they would think we are.

They would treat us how we look.

…different.

But if we come together one more time,
will they finally recognize us,
appreciate us,
or must the shadows remain our home?

Can we show ourselves?
Can we be ourselves?

They may need us,
but we need them too.

That’s how love works,
our love for each other,
our love for our father,
and our love for you.

Note: This poem is dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the North American release of the 1990 classic film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you haven’t seen it, then grab some pizza and watch it today! It’s an excellent movie, with a believable actress playing April O’Neil. Shout out to Judith Hoag! Cowabunga!!!!

  1. LOVE the poem; love the turtles. One of the best graduate level papers I ever received was on the group dynamic of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It was exceptional.

    1. Excellent! I’m always thinking about that group dynamic when I’m thinking of the Turtles. And the 1990 movie did a great job of showing Splinter’s effect on that dynamic, both individually and as a group.
